Looking to the future

By offering a unique, ethical alternative to shareholder and government owned banks, our aim is to become the UK’s most trusted provider of financial services. The decision to propose the merger was not taken lightly. After more than 150 years of service to our members we remain strong, profitable and trusted.

  • Britannia has nearly 3 million customers and traded profitably in 2008 as a strong and secure business.
  • In 2008, 9 out of 10 members would have recommended Britannia to a friend (2008 Member Satisfaction Survey).
  • In 2008, 154,000 new members trusted us with their savings.

By joining forces with The Co-operative Financial Services we are creating a strong, fair and ethical alternative to other high street banks.

It's an exciting development in our history and one that means in the future we can offer customers and members more than ever before.

What will happen to Britannia now the two organisations have merged?

Now the merger has taken place, you can rest assured that our commitment to being member-owned will remain as strong as ever. Former Britannia members have been given the opportunity to become members of The Co-operative Group.

The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest consumer co-operative. A co-operative is not about making profits for shareholders – it’s a group of people acting together to meet the common needs and aspirations of its members, sharing ownership, making decisions democratically and creating value for customers.

On 1 August 2009, the business, assets and liabilities of Britannia were transferred to The Co-operative Bank.

The Co-operative Bank is part of The Co-operative Financial Services, which in turn is part of The Co-operative Group.

The Co-operative Financial Services is the holding company name for the group of businesses that includes The Co-operative Bank, Britannia, smile, The Co-operative Insurance and The Co-operative Investments.
